Contemporary Cabaret shoot: THE EMCEE:
Evaluation:
This is my contemporary version of the cabaret character, The EMCEE. I chose Georgie Dennis to model my character. Her looks are not traditionally androgynous but I think her small features caught an essence of the character. I originally aimed to use a male model but my hair design was only possible if I worked on long hair so I had to work on a female model. I think using the opposite gender to who was traditionally considered The EMCEE also adds to the contemporary element. The EMCEE has many feminine characteristics and traits too so either gender suits the role.
Make-up:
I wasn't fully aware that this wasn't a timed piece when I first arrived to the studio so I was equipped with all the essentials we are required to have during a timed assessment such as a face chart and pictures of my practice trails. I think my design was much more successful this time because of the fact it wasn't a timed assessment. Once I was told this a weight was lifted and I felt much more relaxed! After my historical one didn't turn out as I wanted it to I ensured I practised my design until I perfected it to ensure my outcome was successful. I struggled a lot to find a final make-up design as there are so many options for a contemporary look. After practising I realised I was including to much colour on the face and toned it down a little to ensure the look didn't become clownish. My make-up design wasn't to complex meaning if an element wasn't applied correctly like the stencilled eyebrows and glued on bottom lashes, it would be very noticeable on camera. It's one of the first designs where I have had to have A LOT of patience with but it definitely paid off in the end.
Hair:
This design wasn't my original plan, at first I wanted to create the most outrageous hair style possible after researching club kids and there past looks. However it wasn't until Seema's class that it was brought to my attention that my design didn't incorporate or reference any 1920's or 30's hairstyles. I didn't want to create a short bob again as that had been so commonly done through the semester. Then I came across 90's bun/knots and thought the unusual shape and twist really added a bit of quirkiness to the character, I added kiss curls to the front of the head to ensure there was a 1920's and 30's reference. The hair style looks complex, I assumed when I went to first practice it that it would be quite difficult to first accomplish but it's mainly the parting of the hair that requires the most time. I arrived a little earlier on the day to ensure I could part and prep the hair and the face. The kiss curls were pretty difficult as if I part to much hair at the front of the head then they become much more difficult to create. Thankfully they weren't to hard to create during the assessment but it was very hard trying to avoid them touching the stencilled brows. I wasn't sure if to include coloured sprays within my design so I did a couple of shots at the end of the shoot with the hair knots sprayed with gold. They turned out much more effective than thought, the flash light really picked up the pigment.
