CABARET GROUP DISCUSSION...

Cabaret group discussion:

Questions for presentation...

What characteristics define your choices of characters?

  • Sally Bowles is extremely over the top and assure of herself . She comes across as quite selfish, confident and blunt. She covers her own insecurities by constantly putting on a show for others, she more or less lives her acting, showbiz dream as her everyday persona. She is quite big headed when it comes to men as she puts maximum effort into her appearance all the time so that she is able to attract as much attention as possible. She likes to be perceived as a big, confident character that is very strong minded and willed however under the fake exterior she is quite sad and lonely. We only see this side of Sally a couple of times in the film when we are shown her less glamorous side with no make-up on, this represents the real, human side of her we rarely get to see. Sally's overall portrayal of her character on screen is seen mainly to be a very strong and independent woman.

  • What knowledge of the period did the designer consider processing to be able to develop these characters?

Sally has short hair and wears a lot of accessories like hats in the day to look different and stand out. She also covers her face with a lot of heavy make-up compared to other women we see like Brian's female friend Natalia. Sally also smokes a lot throughout the film which was a very popular habit at the time.

  • According to your research so far, do you feel that the character designs in the film are appropriate?
Her make-up is highly influence by the 60's with the big dark lashes, heavy eye make-up and bold lips. A lot of the designers influence was from the 60's even though the film was set in the 30's. (But made in 1972.) We also see a lot of 20's and 30's hairstyles in the film to.

  • How might you improve it?
Consider the products that would have been used in the 20's to try portray a realistic version of that style.

  • Is it too subtle/too prominent?
Sally's make-up was very prominent in the film. This heavy application made her look much older than she was. She was meant to be only 19 in the film however this was never made clear to the audience, and if it was I think we as an audience would have been much less judgemental of her actions throughout the film.

  • Which techniques were used to create the hair and make-up?

  • Comment upon the colour palette of the film.
